Title: New to Forum - Savage 220 16ga

Hello all.
New forum member here.
I inherited my grandfather's Savage model 220 hammerless single shot 16 gauge and am looking a bit of history info.

It has a 28" barrel, and the markings I can see are as follows:
- Savage Model 220 with the Utica, NY address
- Proof Tested 16 Gauge 2 3/4 inch chamber
- the number 20 inside of a small circle on the right side of the receiver just behind where the barrel meets the receiver.
- inside the receiver on the concave part where the barrel rests are stamped a 3, 2 and B. The numbers are closer to each other and the B is towards the back.
- the bottom of the barrel also has 3 2 B marked on it along with the letter K.
- there are no other markings that I can find such as asterisks or letters to denote what the choke is. The inside of the muzzle measures about 5/8" which will be either full or modified.  I'll need to get an inside caliper to measure it precisely.

I look forward to whatever info anyone can provide.

A nice little treasure was found when I removed the buttplate.  I found a piece of paper with a name and address of what I can only guess is the owner before my grandfather got the gun.  I don't recognize the name but that little piece of paper must be 50-60 years old!  Kinda cool!

Thanks for reading.

Thanks for sharing with us!  It looks very nice!  You have what I call a 2nd Model Utica.  Slim trigger and alloy trigger guard.  The 1st Models had a curved steel guard.  The 20 in a circle is an inspector mark.  To remove the barrel, put the butt on the floor, hold the barrel with one hand, and with the other hand grip the end of the forearm and pull away from the barrel.  The forearm will come completely off the gun so that you can open the action and the barrel will separate from it.  Look on the barrel in front of the lug, and you should see similar assembly numbers to the ones on the inside of the frame.  Similar letters, numbers, should be found stamped into the butt stock, under the butt plate.

Thanks Garnett!
I got the barrel off and also checked under the buttplate and updated pics are attached to the original post.
I found 3 2 B on the frame, the barrel and the stock under the buttplate.  Nice to see the numbers all match!
I also found an S stamped under the buttplate.  Not sure what that signifies, if anything.

Please forgive the obvious rust.  What would you use to remove rust both in the barrel and all over the outside?

Lastly, I was curious if this model is interchangeable with other shotgun or rifle barrels.  It would be nice to have a slug barrel and a rifle barrel to fit to this frame.

Again, thank you.

Glad you got the barrel off.  While all frames and barrels for this series are basically the same, not all will interchange.  i.e., I purchased a 219 barrel that was converted to .219 Zipper.  I had to try it on my 4th action before it would fit properly.  On one action it would not close, on two others there was a gap between the end of the chamber and the frame.  So, if you only have one action, a barrel you randomly purchase may not fit, or may have to be fitted by a machinist if you don't have the metal working skill.  I use WD40 and 0000 steel wool to removed minor rust.  Any oil will do just as well.  Last time I looked, Numrich had a 20 gauge slug barrel with rifle sights for sale.  Barrels are frequently found on EBay.  Thanks for sending the pictures.  You have a very nice gun.
