Title: Savage 220 16 gauge and new member
Post by: dbh1956 on September 11, 2022, 03:18:52 PM
My name is Doug.  I'm a new member from North Alabama.  Years ago I bought this 220 in 16 gauge.  Its a Utica with the alloy trigger guard. Both the barrel, stock and frame are marked "15 Y B".  The side of the frame has a 3 in a circle too. The forend isn't and while it fits ok its not the tightest and has no markings so I wonder if its original.  A few years later I bought a 30/30 barrel with the dovetail.  it has some pitting in front of the chamber and won't close into the 220 frame.  There is a spring loaded pin in the side of the lug that isn't present on the 220 16 gauge barrel. The shape of the hook on the barrel is different too. id like to get the 30/30 barrel fitted, make sure the forend fits, and maybe get it relined to do away with the pitting. Here are some pictures.

Doug, thanks for sharing the pictures with us.  Your 220 in 16 gauge is what I call a Second Model Utica.  It has the slim trigger and alloy guard.  The First Model Uticas had a steel guard, gracefully curved and tapered to the rear.  The "15 Y B" are assembly numbers and show that your gun is a factor original.  The 3 in a circle is an inspectors number.  I would need to see better pictures of the forearm, but feel it most likely is original to the gun.  Very few forearms had markings on them.  You might look closely inside in front of the attaching metal for a single digit number like 7 or 8, but very few even had these.  The .30-30 barrel you have is for a Model 219 B or C.  The stud is to cock the A, B, C, & D suffix actions.  It is not needed to cock your 220 action as the striker is cocked when the top lever is moved all the way to the right to open the action. This stud is not needed and can be removed, but I would leave it in place unless it bothers you.  As to fitting the barrel, if you are not handy with metal work, you may need a gunsmith to fit for you.  However, there are two things to consider.  One, the barrel inletting for the16 gauge forearm wood will be a little wide for the .30 caliber barrel.  Also, if you modify the metal to fit the .30 cal barrel, then most likely it will no longer fit the 16 gauge barrel.  I suggest buying a later style B, C, or D suffix forearm with the attaching metal.  I hope this helps some.  Best wishes, Garnett

I sure don't want to modify the frame so the original barrel won't fit.  Might make more sense to abandon the 30/30 barrel idea. Just keep my eye open for a 219.  Thanks!
