Title: Barrel band swivel
Post by: Sentry44 on January 10, 2015, 02:03:06 PM
Please share your preferences as to barrel band for 219 .30-30.  also, if you know it, the number would be helpful.

I've used Uncle Mikes for other model guns and they're "ok," just wondering if there are better options.

Thx,

I have used the flat band, and the band with a curved edge, and of course the split half bands.  I will try to take pictures soon.  I have not retrieved my guns from "safe" storage since I returned home.  I actually prefer the full band with the curved edges.  All work well on the guns I have put them on, and they look good.  I will try to send pictures soon.

My "new" .30-30 has the split ring barrel band.  Seems to have been on the gun a long time and to be very secure.  I suspect that this is an aftermarket addition.  The rifle came from Nevada, where a sling is just about essential due to the steep and rough hunting terrain--often you need both hands to "hang onto the mountain."  Even many shotguns up there have slings for chukar and blue grouse hunting.

I have used "Uncle Mike's" but like some others also.  www.brownells.com shows some of the barrel band swivels I have used, but I can't find some of the others.  Maybe they are discontinued or I just don't know how to properly enter my search.  Anyway, Catalog #65, 2012/13 on page 233 lists two that I have used and like.  The "Gentry" is blued and ready to install.  The "Tally" is in the white and is not contured, but flat with sharp edges.  I really enjoyed bluing it.  I used a cold blue that works well for me.  On page 235 is a split barrel band by "Magnum".  I have used a similar band with no problem.  I do not have the shipping slips so I don't know what the part numbers are.  I usually put the barrel swivel about 3 inches in front of the forearm tip.  Page 89 of my book has pictures of all 4 styles I have used.  I am sorry it took me so long to get back to you on this.

I have purchased two barrel band sling swivels from New England Custom Guns, I miked the barrel where i wanted the swivel and then some minor fitting, heat up the barrel band and barrel location solder flows fairley easily. Makes an attractive set up. Of course you have to remove the bluing on the barrel where the barrel band is located.

Sling mounts were a factory option on the 219s. They look a bit European. I believe that they were brazed to the barrel.

In my opinion, all long guns ought to have sling mounts. A gun without a sling is like a pistol without a holster. Fine if it always stays indoors.

I have 2 M220 shotguns with what I believe are factory sling swivels, so it stands to reason it was an option for rifles also.  However, I have not seen a rifle with factory swivels and would really like to have a picture if anyone has one of these rifles.

One of my rifles has them. And I have seen them on other rifles that were listed on the Internet. If the sun shines when it is warm out, I will try to take pictures of those on mine.

It was sunny up here today. I had been thinking that I would take the gun outdoors to take the photos, because I have read that the best photos are shot when it is sunny but with the object in the shade. But I just took these in a room with a south-facing window. (The high here was +5.) As you may be able to see in the last picture, there are no screws running into the barrel.

Thanks for the pictures.  These are the same style swivels on my shotguns.  The barrel swivel is what I call "spot welded",  just like the forearm barrel stud.  The factory did a really neat job of mounting these swivels.  What caliber is your rifle?  I have not seen any other rifles with factory swivels.  I take all my pictures inside the house.  I use a white back ground and have two bright clamp on style lights that I can move to the best advantage for picture taking.  Your pictures look great to me.  The detail shows the flat as opposed to round round stock used to make them.  Thanks again for sharing!

Well, thanks back. I know as close to nothing about photography as is possible. It is not one of my interests. If you would like more pictures of the mounts taken from different angles, let me know.

The rifle that has those mounts is a .25/20. My favorite caliber.     This past Thursday I got a shot at a coyote. I had just woken up and saw three deer running down the lane. They stopped at the edge of my yard and all looked back. I saw something farther out and got up and got my monocular. Coyote! I grabbed my M1 carbine. Big mistake. In hindsight, I sure wish I had grabbed a .25/20. The deer ran on into the woods. I cracked open the window and waited as the coyote came closer. I got one clear shot at him but missed. He jumped into the grass under a row of pine trees. Missed again. I then ran to the door and out of the house and lobbed three more shots at him as he fled but had no real expectation of a hit. I blame my missing on the poor sights of the M1. Wish I had grabbed a .25/20 instead. I believe that if I had made the right choice, I would have nailed him with the first shot and have had a pelt.

Thanks for sending these pictures.  What caliber is your rifle that these are on?
