Chris, thank for this new information.  It will be a help.  Do you have any thoughts on what the internal markings are that are sometimes stamped into the wood?  My first thoughts were that these numbers were for barrel size, but then I found the same number for different gauge barrels, so now I wonder if they are forearm outside dimension size or shape?
